In an unfortunate turn of events this film was released after the sleeper hit green card, as it deals with the same exact subject and plot. However, while green card succeeds as a romantic-comdey, paper wedding paints with more subtle strokes, focusing on issues of identity, integrity, and the pain of a settling. Canadian actress genevieve bujold gives an exceptional performance as a middle-aged professor, self-possessed and strong, who enters a marriage of convenience with a chilean political dissident (manuel aranguiz) who is faces certain death if he is extradited. When the two are forced to move in together to persuade immigration services that theyre a genuine couple, a very human connection grows.
